I am *so happy* that I re-discovered my old LJ after a two-year abandonment. I've recently taken up blogging and tracking myself on blogspot, but LJ is much better, since I've been here for many years and, most importantly, I get to customize layouts haha. I've been looking at my previous entries in shock... Needless to say, I was SO different back then and I've grown SO MUCH intellectually, emotionally, i.e. in every way possible. I'm a lot more independent and do not need anyone else (mostly males) to justify my existence or sense of self-worth. I'm a lot more into school than I was back then (first year uni), which was, ironically - in the relative view of my life - a time of intellectual senility in that i had a much diminished love of learning compared to right now and my younger days. the groups i joined back then amuse me lol and are still kind of interesting. i'm going to keep my old posts just to amuse myself hah. this "ang3lic_tears" username is rather embarrassing, but i would need a "purchasing token" to rename myself...
bed time!

3. Institutions and Events A) seattle - world trade o organize meetings about trade - IMF there. trying to organize trade. Strike hand of neo-liberalism - wanted to find conclusion. Rich nations didn't let developing nations to sit at table. Porr countries couldn't participate. 50, 000 people in downtown seattle. They were against neoliberal agenda and current form of globalization.
B) Washington -
II) Gill's Argument 1. summary 2. Main Argumnet A) Reason for failure - Disciplinary
- Need new forms of political agency - new political forms. These movements are potentials. Set of potentials for radical change : human security, democracy, protection of environment, protection of human rights. Modern forms of state and politics quench the spirit of democracy. A lot of hope for protestors in seattle. radical reconstruction of politics. IMF and WTO were all about discpine. They discipline other states and citizens. Poor nations recognize that liberal agendas harm - need to critique disipline from rich nations. Mass majority was not there - no form for protest or dialogue. Another failure was US. US had all or nothing approach. Us wanted more - too much too fast. Even criticism among rich nations. Rich nations fought themselves and poor fought internally.
B) Four contradictions as the basis for global resistance i) big capital and democracy - liberals tie in material and social progress. We have evolved socially and morally. 2) economics and social concerns - through restructuring, shift from state actors to non-state actors. Shift from labour and citizens to big economy, which puts social concerns on background. Global capital has more power. capital is getting bigger - economics is getting bigger. Capital will form another busienss. - another contradiction 3) capital and domestic lives - neoliberalism hurts women and hcildren - cut back funding for weakest members. 4) mono culture and diversity - e.g. monsanto, wipe out seeds and you ahve same plants for miles and miels.
C) Conclusion - hypothesis: special kind of living organism - global crisis. Because of crisis, different people now work together. A lot more in common, becaise of merging of capital and private lives. understand each other better, new sentiments are forming political agency - new form of working together. New grass root movements - no leader or structure - Machiavelli: the collective will - common element - Gramsci updated the Prince: post modern myth - Shaping of collective will is like how tree grows and forms over time. Primarily about democracy. Post-modern myth - goes beyond modern forms of democracy, beyond forms we inherited - doesn't tie itself easily to party or leader. Modernism values unity and sameness - same part of ideology. Identify with the PC party or the NDP party. Define X - focus on barrier or limitation, identity and differendce. in contrast: Divides up diversity, many identities. Shared identities and overlapping identities. New social or globbal mvmt is different from IMF and WTo - WTo is very structured and collective modernism. In contrast, seattle is not like that. The problem with Seattle is thatthere were no leaders to talk to. What gets passed through media is vvery negative. New form of poticial agency is potential - can't figure out what it is, cuz it is still in beginning form. It is global and collective - spontaneous with lots of eneryg.
Concludes by saying that, in time, very powerful form of political energy. hope for world democracy. It will give us what we always wanted in west.. West always feared democracy, but did not give us control over affairs. Economy controlled by small, elite group of people. Anti Global is negative, but media sees negative, wants to cast as positive.
Cautionary reflections on seattle (Sholte) - real work of WTO being disrupted.
1. The argument - overvalued protest and romanticized mvmt. Global mvmt doesn't have that potential. Misses power and inability. Don't have clearly defined vision. Without vision (being antiforce), but gill says they have dream and myth. They are diametrically opposed, - Conceptionally inexact - empirically thin - no evidence. e.g. in monoculture, acting on evidence not proveable. Historically illiterate - little sense of history - Normatively challenged - is shallow. certain things aught to be done. Against globalization - Politically naive - think you can change through protest. Does WTO exist? yes. Didn't change ideology

States will be important 1. provides valueable services 2. Identity will not be lost - identity is strong enough for the nation-state to continue. We have sense of belonging. This increases the NS's ability to secure and maintain itself. 3. Stability and security - militarily, welfare, education - control on power
Descriptively they disagree, but normally they agree. Lot less difference in opinion. Strange thinks they are being eroded. both agree state should exist. Maybe new forms of associations are happening. Challenge notion of state. If state isn't dead - look at where state should exist.
Battle of Seattle: turning point against globalization? New political party and structure. Seattle w as where WTO were held.
1 . Background A) Global social movements: non-state groups that organize transnationally for protest issues and events. Non-state groups that organize transnational, usually to protest issues or events, the environment, peace, economics and so on. B) Post modernism - reaction to modernism. an approach that denis teh existence of a single, fixed reality and pays special attention to texts and speech... to how people actually write and speak about a subject. More with what they do than say. Nation-State is product of modernism - rationalize relationships. Reaction against older, modern conceptions. a protest in seattle not organized - more about passion and affect. through taxation and sense of identity, you abstract what is reall. Rationalize concepts - movements within us that never liked the state. Sep of church and state, religion is more and more dominant. Should tradition, feelings and attitudes have no role to play in state - in modern notion, it shouldn't. There4 u suppress religion, cultures. These are mere abstractions. Course of power suppresses and represses.
Gill is saying that movements of diversity should express themselves - not suppress - play role in public dimensiona nd political role. Mod - nationstate PS - diversity is ok - don't need head and leader
PM - 1989 1990, USSR collapsed and lauched PM era. 262 definiition B) set of conditions particularly poli, material and ecological that are giving rise to new forms of poli agency whose defining myths are associated with the quest to ensure human and intergenerational security on and for the planet, as well as democratic human development human rights.
2. Machiavelli and Gramsci - Gramsci wants to release energies. Wanted political party from bottom up, unlike Marx. Two influes Gill looks at. Grass Root movements released, we will have new poli association, but suppressed. state functiosn as brick well. Fascism and state are the same in the 30's. Need vital energies to renew themselves, ressurrect and grow.
Institutions and Events A) Seattle- form new global trade arrangement. All players there - lower subsidies for people, better access, bring in poor developing nations to give them a hand. Clamoured for more access to advanced markets. Americans protected textile, clothing - open up things Americans produce.

ok so i was down to 123, which is amazing. it was after a day of chocolate and carb binges and a day of almost fasting, but i exercised both days. then yesterday, on easter, i was supposed to do 1200, but that went down the drain right after breakfast. i had some egg whites, chicken noodle and then a LOAD of dried tofu. then i had lentil soup, chicken noodle and a load of fried rice. after lunch, it was papaya and chocolate eggs, which i had been craving so badly. i had planned to skip dinner, but i ended up eating 6 egg rolls, vegetables and a shitload of haw flakes. damn, what a fat day. today, i'm still going strong with the semi-fast. tomorrow will be a healthy day of 1,200 :D
